A Killing Dove
Entertainer Newspaper Article, November 2007
Tri-Cities rock band A Killing Dove is back from London and ready to rock! The return of this interesting blend of professionally trained players has been much anticipated by fans of their previous bands. Their new blend of alternative rock with tight riffs and slightly psychedelic tendencies will be just the thing they’ve been waiting for.

In 2005, Tri-Cities natives Jake (vocals/guitar), and brothers Seth Garrello (guitar) and Kyle Garrello (drums) left town to attend Tech Music Schools in London, England. There they met Jameson Bell, a Canadian bassist dubbed “best overall bass player at the school,” and slipped him a demo of their music. Jameson loved their sound and decided to join the band.

The first jam sessions in their city apartment were decidedly low-key, with unplugged guitars and Kyle playing drums on a beer can. But even with such meager, quiet means of practicing they all saw the potential within the group.

So did the recording engineer who hosted a school field trip to his studio. He was so impressed that he told them if they could pay for the cab back down to the studio he’d record a demo for them free of charge. Three days later they had banged out their first three-song recording together. (Hear the London demo at www.myspace.com/killingdove)

A Killing Dove’s sound is hard to categorize. Their influences range from alternative rock such as Queens of the Stoneage, Stone Temple Pilots and the Red Hot Chili Peppers to classic Led Zeppelin to jazz, electronica and many artists most people wouldn’t recognize. Though they came together with different ideas of what they wanted to play, they all agree that they liked to be loud, raw, and slightly weird. “You go to music school and learn all sorts of theory and jazz, and your head gets jumbled up in a big mess,” says Jake. “So right now we sound like a big, loud, beautiful mess.” Not really a mess, but more a bunch of musical styles incorporated into one strangely (and yes, beautifully) cohesive sound.

The songs even change within themselves, as in “An Introduction” where the steady plodding drums and haunting guitars explode into loud, screaming rock, then drift back to almost whispering vocals several times before the song’s climactic ending. Sometimes they stick with one theme, such as in the straight forward rock and roll tune “Bottled Embers.”

After finishing their demo they decided to move back home. Much to their pleasure Jameson, who had the option of staying at school for one more year, decided to join them. Since their return they have played a few shows locally and are looking for more. To them, the freedom of expression that comes with playing live is the driving force behind music. Unlike getting caught singing in your car or letting loose a scream in a public place, “you get your chance to be loud and emotional without people looking at you like you’re a freak” says Jake.

Their plan for the future is to play as many gigs as possible, get the name out, record more, and do anything constructive and progressive for their band. “Anything that helps us achieve the goal of the biggest Killing Dove show in all existence” says Jake, and all agree.

For more information, come to a show, get some merchandise (they give it away for free) and meet the guys. Catch them Saturday, November 17th at Kimo’s, 9pm, $5. Or check out their myspace at www.MySpace.com/killingdove.
